Discovery

Discovery

Exploring a basement I found a room
poems on chalkboards that warned of doom
I heard a groaning behind a barred door
I saw a keyhole and bent to explore.

Darkness prevailed it was hard to see
but then an eye regarding me
something inside said to run away
but curiosity made me stay.

I gathered my nerve to look again
I saw behind the keyhole then
should I have been surprised to see
the person looking back was me?

How many times have I been here
so many questions left unclear
who did I really expect to find
I’m clearly the blind, leading the blind.

Old Tomes

Old Tomes

Putrefied remains lie on shelves
a mausoleum of words and ideas
overcome by the scent of old glue
stained pages of yellowed nostalgia
displayed like teeth in a death grin.

Dog-eared threadbare hardbacks
every one of them a tiny coffin
rotting patiently for generations
silently stalking to be discovered.

Lady Luck

 Lady Luck

We love to flirt with her
we want her on our side
but lady luck will jinx you.

She makes sweet love to you
as the slot machine handle gives,
or the dice fall on 11.

As the winnings increase
she leaves you feeling intoxicated
and wanting more.

Now you’re a firm believer
you can do no wrong
as long as she is smiling.

She takes coins from your mother’s purse
she takes food from your baby’s mouth
she takes all.

When you have nothing left
leaving you broke and broken
she leaves you flat.

Accountability

Accountability

Back up against the wall
I’m bathing in my diffidence
drowning I am…in a drought
of my own compulsion.
Nothing for you here-
my crazed bones lay in the sun.
Nothing out there either-
just a salty sea of years of tears.
The universe was once my oyster
but I did not have enough grit
to make a pearl.

No More Honey

No More Honey

Doth the little honey bee
making life so sweet
buzzing flower to flower
making our lives so complete.

Meets the bee from Africa
now fighting to survive
the honey bee gets overrun
no more honey in the hive.

Overuse of pesticides
spraying every bug we see
poison pollen in the fields
requiem for honey bees.

Lake Michigan

Indiana_Dunes

Lake Michigan

Knee-high dune grasses
slice delicate skin
as I walk.
Droplets of blood
ooze.

My sneakers squeak
in singing sand
under the hot
noonday sun
as I climb
Mt. Baldy.

Over the
whitecaps of
Lake Michigan
l spy Chicago.

Blinding light
reflecting off dunes
and water
remind me to find
my sunglasses.

I fish them
from my back pocket
retrieving bro

                           ken frames.
