Negative Spaces
I went to see some abstract art at SOMA.
A huge tan canvas
caught my eye
full of angry looking black strokes.
A brush used like a knife
slashing the surface
no staying within the lines here.
I felt a turmoil from it
which I couldn’t put it into words.
The blank spaces within the artwork
trapped, then set free
yet seeking escape from the stark controlling lines.
What the artist couldn’t put into the painting
was plainly there to feel.

No matter what everyone sees something different in a painting like this. Some of my friends wrote nice things about this painting.

Are you having a program like a class or is it drop it on your site? Does one have to do every prompt?
I ask because I’ve been offline most of this week at the doctors and such it can’t be helped. I meant to catch up tomorrow or Saturday but I can’t promise and it can’t be helped. I certainly pick writing first.
Maybe I misunderstood the invite but I thought you had prompts to drop in and write for. If I am wrong please let me know Jishnu.

You’re right – there is anger. Massive anger – at least that’s what I thought when I first saw it.

I have done a few paintings like it in my short art career. I still have one of them on the wall I did when I was 10. It’d be fun to put it up as a prompt and see what people write. Lol!

I am so happy to see you Karen! I must visit your blog it’s been awhile. I read that you were busy offline.
I love WordPress I took a poetry class and made a million friends who are so talented. I already invited them to Mag and Toads.
I have been offline the last few days and depending on what happens I may not be able to write much either. It happens to us all.
You have always visited my work even looking at some of my other poems and are the friendliness sweetest person I write with. Really, I should tell you so more often.

“…A brush used like a knife
slashing the surface…” Aptly describes the image in my opinion. It looks violent and dark, oh well.

This is a great, empathic reading of the art. I am especially fond of the lines:
…angry looking black strokes.
A brush used like a knife
and
What the artist couldn’t put into the painting
was plainly there to feel.

Wonderfully descriptive poem. I particularly like this line: “no staying within the lines here.” It reflects the chaos, while telling us about the control behind the strokes.

The end result on canvas is a reflection of the artist’s demeanour at that point of time. Obviously
in this case, it is in a very unsettling state. Good observation Bekkie!
