Tick Tock
Tick tock, tick tock,
goes the old hallway clock
hours pass across its face
numbers help to keep its place
having hands that point the way
telling me the time of day.
Tick tock, tick tock,
goes the bedroom alarm clock
telling me it’s time to sleep
lay me down, sweet dreams to reap
sleeping ‘way my precious time
woken by the nagging chime.
Tick tock, tick tock,
goes the workplace time clock
laboring my time away
always work and never play
sands of time keep fooling me
falling into entropy.

Sometimes the tick tock can be comforting, but too often for me I am too busy chasing time or trying to stop it.

Oh yes, those sands of time. Tick Tock, time continues to move on. We have to make use of the time we have as the sands of time keep moving…..and our days keep passing.

great form, a pleasure to read aloud.
as someone mentioned earlier, the lines started innocently enough, but it gets meaner towards the end. time is never enough for most of us, i think. 🙂

I think you’ve covered the 24 hours! I did stop wearing a watch when I stated carrying a cellphone, but the tick tock is etched in my brain. So I LOVE this piece and its meter/repetition, so carefully created to look easy and non threatening. Yet entropy is present as well.

This is a very cleverly rendered piece. The rhyme and cadence are bang-on – which, I have found is trickier to ‘get right’ than it might seem, at first pass … especially if it is done this well. The escalating battle with the clock/time and the approaching workday is an extremely relatable and frustrating ‘grown-up’ dilemma and that juxtaposes so beautifully against the against the simplicity of the form. I agree, a book of bedtime poetry for children and adults would be the perfect showcase for this unique – and delightful – brand of poetry. I very much enjoyed reading this.

The sense of time proceeds faithfully irrespective whether one likes it or not.

I think death and disorder are brought on by time. You see, it’s me that’s falling into entropy. I used to have a college friend who had a band called Entropy.

Bekkie, the surface of this seems so simple and straightforward, in a delightfully refreshing way, but on rereading, the clocks get meaner, and something distasteful is lurking there. Well done!
