leaves fall on the water
snowy egrets roost
autumn at high tide

Written for the prompt “fall” at Haiku Horizons. The photograph is mine taken while cycling on the San Francisco Bay and waterways. Snowy Egrets only roost at certain times of the day and season.

The Murder

The Murder

It was a murder
perfected and performed
flashes of black
diving after scurrying figures
nowhere to hide
the violence
silent and quick.

A high scream
pierced the autumn air
flesh torn from bone
blood gushing forth
eyes glazing
as the heart stops
extremities twitching.

When all is picked clean
the killers move on
some bodies are carried away
most are never found
all of it murder.

Some call it survival
the others-
nevermore.

I wrote this about my animated photo of crows taken on a bicycle ride.

Reasons

Reasons

There are reasons for our seasons
as we watch for yearly clues
in the summer we have flowers
multicolored meadows viewed.

Then the trees turn glorious colors
dying leaves fall to the ground
before the burning bonfires end
winter’s come without a sound.

When the Crocuses start blooming
and I heed the robin’s call
spring will bring her wondrous renewal.
Good reasons for us all.

I wanted to write a poem about the seasons while naming them within the poem. There were a few versions of this before I finally got the words the way I wanted them and I’m happy with the way it turned out.

A past musing shared with my friends at Poets United.

The Inevitable Hump

The Inevitable Hump

Fall has fell with a thump
my mood remains in a slump
my ego is bruised with a bump
I’ve become an unreasonable grump.

My hair hangs bunched in a clump
these days I look more like a frump
I need to move outta this dump
I feel like a second-rate chump.

If I were insane I might jump
as my life has resembled a sump
but I can’t lay around like a lump
I must leap this inevitable hump.
