Returning from the war I locked away my gun
put away my uniform and that part of me
I was already damaged and not quite whole
thrown back into the world with bleak uncertainty
doubt funnels through my brain like a sieve
while I sit on a slab of ebbing confusing emotions
a large oscillating wave of self-doubt pressing against me
it never leaves me even when I pretend to sleep
I feel it’s weight upon me even now as I try to speak
a cell-block encasing my heart even though I try to break free
I ask my maker every day, what will become of me?

The prompt was weapon and I could have added it to the poem but this (fantasy) soldier is a weapon himself, taught to both use and become a weapon. Once home, our soldiers find it hard to turn off these learned behaviors and stop the bad memories from returning home with them.
Deactivate-remove from active duty in the military.
I used the animated GIF to write my poem and found it during a Google image search.

My first experience with books was in the library at my grade school. I think I read every book they had about horses. Of course in class, it was Fun With Dick And Jane. Libraries have changed through the years but they still hold countless stories, art, poetry, history, and more. All you need is a library card and it’s yours for the taking. Don’t forget to return your book!

I’m thankful for this quiet time
contemplating my meager meal
maybe the last thing I’ll enjoy
before the wolves are at my door.
I own it all-yep every bit
I was in Viet Nam you see
I did the best I could back home
I gave my all for freedoms call.
Alas, I couldn’t buy a home
and all I’d ask is help with rent
the landlord feels real bad of course
but has his family to support.
I packed my things the best I could
the questions screaming in my head
I don’t know where I’m going to go
and there’s the knock upon my door.

Silver Haired Crusader
The world was sad
with troubles galore
who will save the day
and stop the horror?
The law’s corrupt
the gun law killed
budget is slashed
who fits the bill?
She fears no one
she’s tough as nails
she gets jobs done
she’ll never fail.
Silver Haired Crusader
stay out of her way
fights for your rights
she will save the day.
