Different As Night And Day

All the good and bad they weathered
night and daytime ruled together
then one day they had a fight
the moon got mad and shined too bright
it pushed the sun out of the way
and then decided to steal the day.

The jealous sun its anger bright
took back the daytime from the night
the Gods stepped in to end this fight
and straightened out this perilous plight
the moon felt sad the sun was lost
the sun felt bad that lines were crossed.

Now night and day ruled peacefully
while dusk and dawn meet frequently
the stars doth shine until the day
comes sauntering back to get its way
sun and moon now regulated
for all time they’re separated.

A blast from the past shared with my friends at Poets United. I originally wrote this for a friend, Cat whom I’ve known online for over 10 years, she likes these kinds of fantasies.

Good Night

Good Night

The evening shadows grow and play
as the sun extinguishes its rays
another day has ticked away
and marvelous dreams are underway.

The man in the moon is on display
as twinkling stars show me the way
my bedroom now so far away
until I wake to greet the day.

Overview Imagined

Overview Imagined

I wish that I could see the earth from space
free from the trappings of my life and gravity
my imagination might free me from this plight
so I fancy myself an astronaut on my way to the moon.

Acceleration pulls at me as the rockets propel me forward
I feel another stage release and I clench my teeth as I pray
general confusion and dizziness fill my mind as I try not to be sick
then we are in orbit and I’m floating in my seat.

I slowly move to the window with great expectations
searching the bright dots I find the small ball of pale blue
it looks so peaceful and pristine, just hanging there
everything else fades away as I savor the sight.

Earth, without the complications of being there
a gorgeous living and breathing planet covered in life
no boarders just land masses divided by blue waters
surely a paradise to those who live on the surface.

I realize I am seeing Earth as a whole for the very first time
and I feel completely different than I ever have before
witnessing the overview effect for the first time in my life
fills me full of hope as I re-enter the atmosphere…

…finding myself earthbound in my living room.

“When we originally went to the moon, our total focus was on the moon. We weren’t thinking about looking back at the Earth. But now that we’ve done it, that may well have been the most important reason we went.”— Overview Institute co-founder David Beaver, retelling what one astronaut has said.

They say that the photograph of our “big blue marble” has had a huge effect on how we think of our relationship to the world around us already. When you look at Earth from the sky, you do not see borders or nations or divisions or conflicts. You see a fragile-yet-strong miracle and the main objective becomes clear: to care for this wonderful, rare thing. And according to the overview effect, that can make a real difference in the world.

Listen as the astronaut’s themselves describe our planet as seen from space and watch the beautiful view. It gives me hope that we may yet, become a unified and healthy functioning planet someday.

The Dance

The Dance

Lovely music fills the room
attraction wafts like fine perfume
ladies waiting for their chance
will he, won’t he, ask to dance?

There she stood against the wall
beautifully vulnerable at the ball
watching; how she longed to dance
if only someone took the chance.

Couples dancing close and slow
the moon was shy and dipping low
her eyes they met a young man’s glance…
take a chance, please take a chance.

Mother’s On The Moon

Mother’s On The Moon

It’s almost the month of June
not quite yet the end of May
my mother’s on the moon
and there is where she stays.

She fell in love with a man
the man she saw in the moon
coming up with a perilous plan
to go in a makeshift balloon.

I watched through a telescope tense
as she made her frivolous flight
it caused some earthly suspense
but she made it that very night.

Towards the end of a lovely June
their love blossomed and grew
bringing forth a second moon
but no one was feeling blue.

In modern use, when 13 full moons occur in a year, usually one calendar month has two full moons; the second one is called a “blue moon“.

Technicolor Wings

Technicolor Wings

I sail night skies with technicolor wings
the moon smiles up at me and sings
dripping stardust ‘cross the velvet sky
my shimmering wings make angels sigh.

No one can sail as high as me
the stars they wouldn’t care to disagree
light as a feather with my gossamer wings
I play hide and seek in Saturn’s rings.

Venus winks at me as I glide by
straight through the Milky Way I fly
the sun is coming up I see it’s glow
so quickly, back to Earth I go.

As my feet they touch the ground
morning finds me home, earthbound.

Sleep Tight

Sleep Tight

In deepest slumber
when tired we seem
we go to sleep
perchance to dream.

The man in the moon
playfully winking
suddenly frowns
his mood is sinking.

The starlight fading
blacker than black
from this trance
you won’t come back.

Sleep like the dead
or so they say
tonight’s the night
asleep you’ll stay.
