Beauty And The Beast
Morning sunlight cuts through the night before
filters through bent and busted window blinds
as I lay watching
dust particles swirl through golden shafts of light
with one eye swollen shut
they flicker like fireflies
I used to catch and put in jars
I too, feel trapped
as I lay stunned and broken on the floor.
A beer bottle whizzes by
shattering my idyllic daydreams
glass shards glittering as they fly
cutting reminders of happier times
when I thought this beauty
had married a wonderful prince.
Blood stains and holes in the walls
the beast lurches out of the darkness
I tense and wait…
On days like this…
he tells me I never looked more beautiful.

This is a photo prompt from the Imaginary Garden With Real Toads and what it made me think of. The photo is Firefly by George Seeley (1907). I’m pleased to find a photo prompt at Toads and hope to see more in the future. I threw in the name of the photo in my dark poem just because.
Words were spoken
that can’t be taken back
that day of discovery.
Collapsing under pride
they tumbled right out
along with hard feelings
splashing into pools of deceit.
I crumble under pressure
as I struggle for
the right words.

Published here for the first time from Picturesque Words. The quote was found on a Google image search author unknown.
She hiked through the backwoods
alone in her toxic thoughts
again, her life was filled with emptiness
love had passed her by.
Her teardrops like a downpour
storming down her face
trepidation in her footsteps
she felt vulnerable and used up
she was damaged goods.
She didn’t deserve to be treated like this
it wasn’t the first time
numb to the outside world
a trickle of anger broke through
now weeping profusely
the flood broke loose.
She didn’t notice until the damage was done
she had cried a river of tears
and by losing herself

Written for the prompt “flood” with my friends at Poets United. I animated the artwork which I used as part of the prompt.
Once the pain has been dealt
once the sadness is felt
once your life comes undone
once the tears have begun
once the going gets tough
can one tear be enough?
