Candy Land

Candy Land

Soldiers waging war with flowers
bullets made of candy sours
everything one could devour
messing with their willpower.

All the men had taken vows
but had an urge for candy now-
they missed the posted sign somehow:
Eating Candy Is Not Allowed!

Licorice trees and sugar sand
it was more than they could stand
their bellies filled on enemy land
now, candy fell from useless hands.

The warning sign-a bitter pill
the candy took away free will.
Standing very,
############very,
##################STILL.
Gummy soldiers on the hill.

Deep

in deepest forest
defeating the darkest corners
sunlight penetrates
bringing light to the unseen
illuminating my thoughts

A tanka embracing one of my favorite things in poetry, brevity. The other is rhyme. Written for dVerse~Poets Pub.

This is what I used to make my artwork (part of a larger photograph I took.) I caught a leaf falling, not only that, but it had a hole in it I could see through. It was suspended there just for my camera. I think it’s magic catching something like this while it’s happening. Perfect for this prompt and the last day of 2017. Happy New Year!

Written with Haiku Horizons (my last poem of 2017) for the prompt fresh. Shared with Poets United also.

Beneath A Tree

Beneath A Tree

When I sat beneath a tree
ruminating memories
something basic came to me.

Trees will never disagree
know the sum of one plus three
change their sexuality
or wonder whether they are free
own a home or property
or worry ’bout the world we see.

The smell of earth was heavenly
shadows fell like filigree
the quiet air of mystery
the bark that tells a history
all slowly growing peacefully
it made me thankful just to be.

Written with my friends at Poets United for the prompt “peace.” The art is a photograph of mine taken on the Bay Trail, put through an art filter and animated.

Nothing Personal

Nothing Personal

I amble down
a road less traveled
a path is discerned
almost telepathically
I inch my way along
somewhat cautiously.

Mossy growth glistening
marching through the woods
mounting an invasion
against the trees.

The damp smell of death
permeating my senses
life mirrors nature
nature’s way is survival
nothing personal.

Reasons

Reasons

There are reasons for our seasons
as we watch for yearly clues
in the summer we have flowers
multicolored meadows viewed.

Then the trees turn glorious colors
dying leaves fall to the ground
before the burning bonfires end
winter’s come without a sound.

When the Crocuses start blooming
and I heed the robin’s call
spring will bring her wondrous renewal.
Good reasons for us all.

I wanted to write a poem about the seasons while naming them within the poem. There were a few versions of this before I finally got the words the way I wanted them and I’m happy with the way it turned out.

A past musing shared with my friends at Poets United.
