Under Summer Skies

Under Summer Skies

Under summer skies we played
fair and blue on Warrington Lake
we jumped in waters stained with clouds
swam through lily pads out to the raft
leaped into the cold and deep
muck sucking at our feet
while fish nibbled at our white skin
giggling and screaming all the while
of course, someone would always cry
later on forgetting why
for memories are always kind that way
when the family meets for summer play.

Hiking ’round the lake for fun
picking winterberries and wildflowers
while watching for bears
changing clothes with biting horseflies
lake perch that grandpa caught
with bread and fresh blueberries
this and more I do remember
wonderful times I’ll treasure forever
for memories are always kind that way
when the family meets for summer play.

Thank you, everyone, for the summer skies and fun back then! Love always, Bekkie

Written for my family (you know who you are) in memory of my cousin Jay Banasyznski who passed away recently. I was happy to see him 2 years ago at the wedding after not seeing him for 40 plus years. When I think of him now I picture him as an always smiling big kid, like when I last saw him most.

Jay really hasn’t changed much here. Jay (left) and Uncle Gene (right) at the wedding. I took the picture of Warrington Lake on this visit to Uncle Gene’s place. Love you.

Deep

in deepest forest
defeating the darkest corners
sunlight penetrates
bringing light to the unseen
illuminating my thoughts

Beneath A Tree

Beneath A Tree

When I sat beneath a tree
ruminating memories
something basic came to me.

Trees will never disagree
know the sum of one plus three
change their sexuality
or wonder whether they are free
own a home or property
or worry ’bout the world we see.

The smell of earth was heavenly
shadows fell like filigree
the quiet air of mystery
the bark that tells a history
all slowly growing peacefully
it made me thankful just to be.

The Flood

The Flood

She hiked through the backwoods
alone in her toxic thoughts
again, her life was filled with emptiness
love had passed her by.

Her teardrops like a downpour
storming down her face
trepidation in her footsteps
she felt vulnerable and used up
she was damaged goods.

She didn’t deserve to be treated like this
it wasn’t the first time
numb to the outside world
a trickle of anger broke through
now weeping profusely
the flood broke loose.

She didn’t notice until the damage was done
she had cried a river of tears
and by losing herself
it easily
^^^^^^^^^^^^swept
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^her
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^away.

Time To Fly

Time To Fly

The sun watches all from high in the sky
caterpillar to butterfly, miracles so small
when wings become dry it’s time to fly.

Everything smells wonderful and clean
flowers and grasses grow so tall
the sun watches all from high in the sky.

In the warmth, my mood is serene
outside the sunlight touches all
when wings become dry it’s time to fly.

There is magic in the color green
and music plays in nature’s call
the sun watches all from high in the sky.

The spirit renews in life’s routines
slow and steady the protocol
when wings become dry it’s time to fly.

Many mysteries remain unseen
constantly changing our tiny blue ball
the sun watches all from high in the sky
when wings become dry it’s time to fly.

Nothing Personal

Nothing Personal

I amble down
a road less traveled
a path is discerned
almost telepathically
I inch my way along
somewhat cautiously.

Mossy growth glistening
marching through the woods
mounting an invasion
against the trees.

The damp smell of death
permeating my senses
life mirrors nature
nature’s way is survival
nothing personal.

The Woods

emilycarrravenThe Woods

Quiet times spent in the woods
where everything is green and grand
the woods are full of things so good
I walk in wonder of this land.

The creatures here are wild and free
the birds they sing sweet songs so fair
the woods are where I long to be
as I find peace and beauty there.
